I was just checking out Cabelas and they have the Pietta .36 Navy steel frame on sale for $199.00!! the regular price is $249.99. Thinking REAL hard on pulling the trigger and getting one. Help me out!! . Do they consider a black powder pistol a firearm? if not I can get free shipping till midnight tomorrow.

The first thing is whats your state law concerning BP firearms?

Here in Michigan i can walk into any gun store and show that I am over 18, and have the funds and walk back out with a BP pistol or long gun, without any kind of background check, or paperwork.
I have had several long guns(bp), and pistols shipped to me at my house with no problem what-so-ever. Matter of fact I had the 1851 Colt with the white grips, and lazer engraving bought and shipped to my house from Cabelas'. But I had to send them a noterized form that I was who I said I was, and the age I said I was. But I think that was/is a Michigan thing.

Armakiller, the U.S. Gov. does not consider it a firearm, and Alabama is still outside the gun control curtain, AFAIK. I think you will be OK getting it shipped to your front door but let's see if more members can answer this one. Treestalker.

As far as I know you should be good on the shipping in Alabama. You will enjoy the gun. In most areas an original or replica muzzleloader or cap and ball pistol is not considered a firearm for shipping or transfer purposes.

Order it  Bama is still a pro gun state till a few little child liberals grow up to make lawyers then senators an then we will be like some of the other CRAZY states. But right now your good to go

I'n not going to be of any help. I tried to order it the other night and stopped when I couldn't get free shipping so yes it is considered a firearm (by Cabela's). I'm still thinking real hard about it. They don't put the Navies on sale often and while it's not a super deal it is about as good as we probably will see.

I just ordered it!! shipping was only 16 bucks and change, not bad. Now to buy a .380 mold and some unlubed wads. If anyone else is thinking about buying one, now is the time to get it. Who knows? the sale might be just for this weekend.

Why not ask Cabela's, they are shipping it?????????????? Seems simple to me to ask the shipper?

Wait on the mold till you get the revolver before buying the mold and accessories then slug the bore and measure the chambers. I'm sure you will find the .380" mold too large and will probably want a .375" mold.

Apparently there are some shipping restrictions to the Socialist States, however, every Cabelas cap & ball revolver I've purchased was either via the Free Shipping, or the $5 discount code. You shouldn't have any problems shipping to the Free State of 'Bama.

If you read the restrictions on the current free shipping offer you will see that it does not apply to firearms which according to Cabela's includes black powder guns. I know they won't do the free shipping as I went all the way through the checkout process to the final click & pay and they would not do the free shipping. I have gotten the $5 shipping on black powder arms in past orders. Also the last time I tried to order a revolver with a 10% off coupon they would not honor the $5 shipping as they said that only one offer applied to any order. It seems they are tightening up.

I bought one for my grandson's birthday. The stock was't a perfect fit. The rifling had chatter marks, like the tooling was dull.375 balls left a good ring. He put 24 rounds threw it. The sights were right on,and it shot real nice.I asked him if we should return it for another one.He said"heck no grandpa, this is MY first gun,and Im keeping it." 17 and hooked. He's been looking at my Whitneyville Dragoon kind of funny, and likes to put his dirty hands on it. Next year I will get him his own.

I've heard different people give widely different views of the quality of the Pietta revolvers. Could it be that they are built by craftsmen who have different levels of skill? Maybe the quality control is not as good as it could be?

I recently bought a Pietta New Army .44 from Cabelas for $199.00, that seems to be perfect in every way. The fit and finish is better that I've seen on much more expensive guns, and it shoots better than I could have hoped for. Maybe I just got lucky, or maybe yours was just one that got through the quality control process.

I guess the best way to buy one is to go to the store in person if possible.

Some may disagree with me but there was a time back in the late '70's when Uberti was the best with Pedersoli second, F.LLI PIETTA was pretty good and Palmetto was just about the bottom of the barrel (no pun intended).

In the '80's and '90's Pietta started gaining on Uberti and Pedersoli's quality and Palmetto was floundering.

In the 2000's Palmetto was gone while Pietta has all but caught up with equaling Pedersoli and some of the recent postings seem to indicate Uberti has slipped a bit in the quality of their newly made guns.

That has allowed Pietta to catch Uberti.

Zonie, I'll agree in all but the time frame for Pietta. The one I got in the mid 90's was pretty poor though with some, well actually a little more than some work it turned into an excellent revolver. It was nearly unusable out of the box and ended up serving as my match gun for a while. The past several Piettas I have bought have been very good straight out of the box and the finish is superb. I was selling muzzleloading arms in the 90's and when a skirmisher wanted a revolver I would go by Taylor's and go through several Uberties and pick the best. At the time they were the best, today I wouldn't pay the extra.

Palmetto didn't even have a foot on the ladder and Armi San Marco was only a couple of rungs up.

Well I went and did it, a few hours ago I ordered a Pietta '51 Navy from Cabella's. I have been having problems with the site all week, not being able to leave the home page, so I called. I told the lady what I wanted (didn't have the item #) and she found it, $199. I mentioned that I guess the discount and free shipping don't apply. She responded "It certainly should" then she found the firearms exclusion. She then said "wait a minute, let me try something" and presto I got free shipping. She must have found another offer somewhere that she could apply so I'll have my revolver in about 8 days at the actual sale price. This will be the first actual .36 Navy that I have owned. I do have a brass Euroarms and a Navy Arms Griswold & Gunnison and had a brass Hawes 45 years ago but they aren't "real" Navies so don't count.
