Recently inherited this J brennan rifle that I am trying to figure out if its the J brennan. Its really a beautifully made rifle with quality components. It is here in Michigan where brennan originated and I have seen that some of his early rifles werent numbered and signed J brennan. But it isn't quite as exquisite as his modern works.

Is this an authentic J brennan? My FIL passed suddenly and he made no mentions of it. It truely is the nicest blackpowder I have ever handled.

Could be an authentic Jud Brennan, but honestly it just doesn’t show the ‘look’, for lack of a better term, that the two I saw in person had, nor see in photographs of his guns. And for what it is worth, I do admire the ‘look’ of Brennan’s guns. As you mention, ‘it isn’t quite as exquisite as his modern works,’ though it is a nice gun. Without the J Brennan stamped on the top flat, it wouldn’t even be in the conversation for me, but go ahead and ask the man as @squirehawk1774 suggests. You could have the real deal, maybe just an early example.

His early work looks completely different than what his guns look like today. I seen one of his really early rifles at a gun show back several years. If it didn't have Jud's name on it you would never have known who made it. Just look at Mark Baker's old rifle by Jud Brennen it looks nothing like his work today. The one I seen was even earlier than the MB's rifle.
