The silver maple seeds will soon cover my yard to a depth of several inches (or so it seems). The critters must consider these seeds to be delicious. Are there any recipes utilizing these seeds? I hate to see them go to waste if they are useful. :hmm:

Yes, just leave them on the ground, and some day you will live deep in the Silver Maple Forest. :rotf: :rotf:

"Eat the critters"

Do you have any idea how many chipmunks it takes to make a decent meal??? At least they probably taste like maple syrup this time of year.

There's an article in Backwoodsman May/June 2006 issue about this. They say to get the seeds out and boil them until soft (about 15-20 min), then season to taste. They indicate the taste is similar to a mix of hominy and peas. I have eaten lots of wild foods, but never this. I'm going to try it as soon as the maples shed their helicopeters!

I wish I had this recipe last year. We must have 15,000 little trees growing under the Maples in my yard. I thought that they would die over the winter (they were to danged hard to pull up last year). Guess what, they are already bigger than they were last year and even harder to pull up. The chipmunks are too busy eating the hickory nuts and acorns to fool with these helicopters. Any body got any idea how to get rid of the maple shoots or anybody interested in buying some maple tree seedlings????

Saute them in them squirrel critters, and fry em up! Maple Stuffed Squirel! Hmm Hmm!

Well, I didn't mention that I have a shade garden under the maple trees. The trees form a semi-circle with a hammock between two of them. The hammock overlooks our firepit and the shade garden. I worked for too many years to get the garden to where it is now to just mow it down now! Looks like my son that just graduated is coming up form Nashville to stay with my 11 year old. I think I maight pay them a penny a tree to pull them up this year!

We'll I bet if you caught 3 or 4, and put 'em in a blender you'd have a filling maple flavored protein shake.
