Every time I look at one of these old originals, I am always struck at how thim the barrels were.

Perhaps they weren't trying to turn everything into a "magnum-something-or-other" and loaded for the work the piece was designed to do.
 
It looks like it might have been placed in the key hole and rotated 90 degrees. There appears to be room inside the mounting screws.
