I did not see the show and am not sure of the facts, but I do see one issue:

Antarctica is not US soil. The US lays claim to any military material within its soil or territorial waters. Pretty ruthless about it too.

BTW, I know there is at least one other P-38 Lightning in flying condition -- I stood up on it and looked inside it a few years ago. It looked good for its age.
