    gun oil v. olive oil

Back in 2009 I did a rust test using several types of lubricant, and posted the results on the forum. I used finish nails driven into a 1x4 and cleaned with alcohol.Products used were WD40,Hoppe's gun oil,ATF,TC Bore Butter and Olive Oil. I left them outside during the rainy season in...

Deer season kicking off in Oregon

This weekend opens general modern rifle deer season in Oregon.Since I'm more about the hunt than the kill, I prefer to hunt all season with a traditional MZ. My last deer was with my 62 smoothbore. This year, I'll hunt with a GPR caplock in 54 cal. Roundball for sure  Same gun for Elk...

    Black powder power

If I hunt deer with a 45 cal, I use a conical. As far as penetration, the heavy bullet will penetrate much more than the lighter RB. I shot a 10 or 11 inch block of green cedar with a 50 cal. REAL bullet and it blew right through it.The 50 RB with the same charge went in about 5 inches.Not...

    T/C Hawken .45 -vs- .50 Accuracy

IMO the 45 has less recoil than the fifty and therefore most will experience less flinch. Most all can shoot the lowly 22 cal rifle better than a larger cal.I think the same will apply to shooting muzzleloaders as well. Most of us don't flinch when shooting  Just hand someone an...

    Drum for Douglas Barrel

Not sure re taping it will work as I can only get a couple of turns before it stops the nipple from seating. It extends to far into the drum! I think I'll just weld the clean out solid. The clean out screw was not original when I bought the rifle. Stainless screw. Someone made this rifle using...

    Drum for Douglas Barrel

I recently bought a 54 Cal ML with a GR Douglas 54 cal barrel. When shooting it the other day,the clean out screw popped out. (Spewed like a roman candle) LOL! Looks like the threads are toast. Anyone know, the thread size of drum I need to order for that barrel? I even thought about welding a...

    Water temp for cleaning

If I clean in the house, I use hot water. Outside, I use cold from faucet.I notice the hot water cleans with less swabbing, but both do nicely.Haven't had the flash rust problem outside or in the barrel.

    ignition troubles

Lots of good suggestions! I use Black most of the time, but do use Pyrodex also. I never use anything but 3f Black or Pyro P in all my guns. Pyrodex is lighter than BP so may be a little harder getting it to the flash channel.I have had problems with Pyrodex RS and Select.(Slower ignition, and...

    Sidelocks and pellets

Lots of good advice,,,,,,,,,,The only thing I would add is...Try using 3f instead of 2.Finer powder, takes about 10% less than 2. That makes it cheaper to shoot  Every side slapper I own loves it.If you can't find Real BP, try Pyrodex P.It's finer grained, and I think you will find has a...

    Patch Thickness Variation

Ain't it the truth!I haven't pounded one down the barrel in a while. The older I get, the more I prefer easy. As long as it don't roll back down the barrel, I'm happy.

    Info on drop trigger pistol

A friend recently traded for a pistol, and doesn't have a clue who made it and when it was made. It has a lot of engraving and looks to be extremely well made. The only number on it is a 3 stamped under the barrel. The trigger drops into the firing position when it's cocked. It is a caplock.It...

    45 Cal. Miroku

It's a Ultra-Hi Miroku. I called Dixie, and talked to their gunsmith. He said they didn't have a hammer in stock. Suggested I send the two pieces to him and he could build or compare. Problem is....I only have the bottom half lol! I'll give Track a call later. No hurry! I only have a few...

    45 Cal. Miroku

I just purchased a 45 cal. Japanese made Miroku at a garage sale. Couldn't pass it up. 65.00 and it had about75.00 worth of stuff with it.Nice powder horn,Lee double cavity mold,CO2 discharge kit, and about 300 RB's.Plus other things.Only problem with the rifle is a broken hammer.Any ideas about...

    Investarms 50 Cal Hawken

I think you are also using too heavy a powder charge in that gun. 70 grains of RS is the equivalent to about 90 grains of Goex FFFg powder. ********************************************* Paul! I thought 70 grains of RS would be equivalent to about 60 grains of 3f.Pyro P is the sub. for 3F Goex.RS...

    Nipple for Douglas Barrel

Duh Me!Sure Douglas just made the barrel. I just put a new T/C nipple in it and it locks down tight. An older nipple I had with me at the range fit sloppy. He will need to replace the drum before long.Cannot take a pic. the gun is on it's way back home.

    Nipple for Douglas Barrel

My son recently bought a 54 cal.caplock with a Douglas Barrel.Since he works such long hrs. he never seems to find time to shoot, so he wanted me to test fire it for him.I took it to the range today and fired it with several loads and patch combo's with pretty good results. One problem I found...
