    Little Help Needed Please

Many great pieces of advice above... I would add 1 thing. after you shoulder it and before you cock the hammer, give the lock side of the stock a light thump with the heel of your hand. levels the powder in the pan and tilts it slightly away from the touchhole causing the flash to flare...

    Vent liner

it may have a slot for a screwdriver as Smokepolehall said, if not an easy-out should work. You might have to drill it larger to get the easy-out in but then it will just unscrew. if its been in there since the 70's you might want to soak in some Kroil or penetrating oil for a couple days...

    I'm back...

sorry I've been gone for awhile. started a long time ago, but thought I'd let you know I've returned to spread my wisdom (hopefully) and finely honed sense of humor. Note: I'm not really that narcissistic, but thought the announcement needed a little kick.

    leather on the flint?

paulvallandigham "The lead weight gives more mass to the end of the cock as it comes over the top of the arc, and gravity begins to assist the cock in falling down towards the face of the frizzen. That very small bit of increase in velocity makes for a better bite into the steel to scrape off...

    rack or meat?

I guess it does seem to be a loaded question, but it was not intended to be. :v Personally, I have always wanted to to hunt bighorn sheep on a mountainside somewhere. Always thought bighorn would make a nice headmount above the woodstove. I always ate what I shot, as it seemed wrong...

    Colt Vs. Remington

I have the same problem as CoyoteJoe, my remington bumps my middle finger uncomfortably. It's not so bad for a handful of slow shots, and if I alter my grip to cock it I don't feel much. I'd hate to have to fast fire the whole cylinder though. The Colt just feels right in my hands (which I...

    rack or meat?

So meat for almost everyone... If anyone has passed up this topic as argumentative, don't worry about posting. I don't have a problem with trophy hunting (so long as the deer is not wasted). I've seen a couple bucks in the woods with the head cut off and the rest left to rot. :cursing: I...

    rack or meat?

Just wondering... amongst the deer/elk/moose/riegndeer/etc. hunters, do you hunt more for, a trophy rack or for meat? Personally, I've always preferred small bucks when possible (or legal, darn them antler restrictions!!) :cursing: :youcrazy: . They seem to taste better. Had one shot at a...

    leather on the flint?

I always use a piece of thick buckskin, rough side in (out of habit??). I read the arguments for and against, some made sense some didn't. At the risk of starting another technical or HC argument, (acorn finials, anyone? :shocked2: ), it seemes to me that a lead wrap would (being much...

Brass Ramrods - Where now ?

Actually it doesn't take a machine shop to produce a good SOLID brass ramrod. I made mine years ago (inspiration from here). Went to the local supply house in Binghamton (can't remember the name offhand) and walked out with 10' of solid 5/16 brass. Hacksawed to length, and with a hand file...

    traditions flintlocks worth buying?

I own a Traditions Hawken Woodsman in flint, a Christmas gift from my wife and our families. It was my first blackpowder muzzleloader and took some getting used-to. It may not be historicaly accurate or period correct. It might be poorly designed or an unskilled copy of an original. After...

    Waterproofing a horn

Beeswax is exactly what I've used on my horns. Both the plug and the spout stopper. I put a chunk in a tin and get it warm enough to turn paste consistency, then greased the plug and the inside of the horn with a good coating. I sand my plugs to fit the natural shape of the horn base with a...

    Beeswax: Killer Bee Attractant?

Never had a problem here, either. But as you stated, I'm way north from you. Maybe try a test. Drive out to a safe location that won't bother people, and stick a wad against a tree, pole or whatever. Go back by now and then and see if it's drawn anything. I would think it would draw flies...

How to attach horns to bag?

On my bag, I simply punched two holes (one on each side of the bag) about 10" up the strap. I then ran thongs from each end of the horn through the holes, knotted on the backside of the strap. [/img] Legion

    Colt vs Rem

Regarding the failure to fire... We had a very warm winter last year (into this year-- 60 degrees in Febuary), so I would go hike on saturdays with either my '58 Rem or my '51 Navy. The Colt was left loaded (NOT normal practice for me) for 2 months during our spring cold snap. When I took...
