    CANNON QUESTION

Its my understanding (rookie at best) that cannon barrels weren't rifled till about mid American civil war. Is that true? I would have thought someone, somewhere would have tinkered with rifling a barrel when rifling for pistols and shoulder arms became more the norm. Perhaps, it was...

    Started Finishing My Kibler

Well, this week, I started finishing my Kibler Colonial. Some really good sanding being mindful not to get beneath the depth of some of the brass parts or "recurve" any of the surfaces. Used a nice coat Laurel Mountain stock stain and I must say, it's looks pretty dang good. A little light...

    Working brass.

Been removing the casting marks on my Kibler Colonial kit brass pieces. After filing, wet sanding they shine and are silk smooth. Now I'm wondering if I should keep the pieces shiny or chemically "antique" them. Im kinda siding with antiquing them. What say yee? -Doc

    Lamp Black

Whilst waiting for my jar of Prussian Blue transfer color to arrive, I decided to try a little lamp black. I raided my wife's collection of Yankee candle jars and yep, under the glass lids was quite a bit of soot or lamp black. It works like a charm!!!! -Doc

    Let the Games Begin!!!

I'm so excited to finally have my Kibler Colonial, 50 cal smoothie kit! The woodworking I'm pretty confident of and actually there isn't all that much to do. It will be the barrel browning I'm going to have to watch a few videos about. Waiting for my Prussian Blue transfer color to arrive...

Saw Two Types of Antique Guns Today

While my better half was shopping, I stopped in at an antique store close by just to wander around. He had a gun section with assorted pistols but what caught my eye was a Blunderbuss and a matchlock. All purportedly original (and the prices reflected that). What intrigued me about the...

    Builder Choices

Hey everyone. I’m looking to have an American Fowler made up for yours truly. Hey, kinda doubt I’ll find it under the Christmas tree so I might as well do something for me. im looking at Kevin Blevins or Tennessee Valley Muzzleloading as the builders. Explosive Cannonballs

Good morning. I searched the forums here but didn't find an explanation. My apologies if this has been discussed before. How are Cannonballs made to be explosive? I would think loading them with powder would be problematic as the cannon discharged, the powder within would ignite from the heat...

    The Log Cabin Gun Shop

As luck would have it, I'll be up in the Cleveland area soon. Is it worth the (seemingly short) drive to visit the Log Cabin Gun Shop? It seems like its THEE place to go spend a little money

Just Ordered a new Kibler Kit

Just Ordered a Colonial Kit from Kibler. Katherine is a joy to speak with. The downside? Jim and Katherine are doing well enough that there's a 4-6 month delay with the smoothbore barrel. Actually, I'm kinda happy for them. Hey, it will be a late Christmas present for yours truly.

A Tip from an Old Guy About Another Polish

If your barrel or other metallic piece needs to be cleaned, shined or smoothed out, you can use regular old toothpaste as an abrasive. It's about the equivalent of 600 grade sandpaper, perhaps a little finer. I've used it on airplane propellers with great success over the years. Just go with...

    How was this done?

OK, how did the artists back in the 1700s and 1800s accomplish the engraving and carving like the Lock I posted here. If that lock is made of steel, then the engraving tools had to be harder than steel to cut it. The engraving and carving tools (chisels and files?) had to be pretty dang...

    Rumor has It....

I was just about ready to "pull the trigger and get a TVM Fowler kit but rumor has it that Jim Kibler may produce a trade gun. DANG!!! Has anyone spoken with Katherine about this? Is there a bit of truth to the rumor? If there's a fleck of truth in this rumor, the TVM is on hold for a spell. I...

History of the Indian Trade Gun

I'm interested in reading about the variations of the Indian Trade gun, particularly the Northwest version. The builders, the history, etc. What the stock was generally made from. Were the barrels typically browned, blued or left in the white. Typical calibers or gauges. Oddities. Well, you get...

    .69 cal Cleaning Rod

Good morning! I'm having trouble finding a single piece, 44 inch cleaning rod for my Harpers Ferry M1842. I love Dewey cleaning rods but they're suggesting I use their unit made for 20 gauge. Well, the conversion shows it's close 20 gauge = .628 caliber. Pretty dang close. Dixie Gun works only...
