Drilling on bolster for nipple placement

Have been meaning to ask for a long time. A muzzleloading builder and friend of mine passed just over a year ago. The last time I was to his place, he handed me his .54 Leman to change back to percussion so his kids could hunt with it. He converted it to flintlock, just for fun, before passing...

    Pack Frame

Just finished this for an overnight hike with a church group. I'm going "old school" to show 'em how it's done (and test equipment I've made). Really didn't take long. It's made from poplar trees, very light. [/img]

    Source for carbon steel

Was doing some maintenance work on the plow truck this morning. The BOSS snow plow cutting edge is "high carbon steel", according to the manual. If you needs some in quantity, ask some plow guys for worn out pieces. It may be good for flint/steel kits, knife blades, etc. Just a thought...

    Natural Tinder Bundle

Spent part of the weekend at Lake Michigan this weekend. Found quite a few bundles of these: ]Grass Root Bundles They were basically dry and very tight, fine bundles of dry tinder. They came from undercut banks that exposed the roots of grass on the beach, but were twisted by wave action...

    K'Zoo Show Coming Soon

http://kalamazooshow.com/ Wasn't able to make it last year. Actually, my heart wasn't into it, as the guy I usually went with, was very sick. He's since passed away. Trying real hard to get back into it, so may have to make the trip for him...

    Forging Projects

[/img] Not near as good as some of you do as far as forging, but my first attempt at utensils. A spatula for cast iron, a steak flipper (because I broke a tine off a fork :( ), and a turn screw. I've looked around for a forge, but can't find a used one. But, I have to admit, this is fun...

    Lefties

OK, we've had a lot questions about "I'm left handed and the only flintlock I can find is right" type subjects. Well, here's what happened today. I was at a m/l shoot and wouldn't you know it, I broke my ramrod. It never made a cracking noise, but next thing I knew, I had 3 pieces in my hand. No...

    Beeswax Candles

I have a candle mold from Jas. Townsend I like to make beeswax candles from. The problem I'm having is the candle flame gets extremely low most of the time. Almost like the melted wax is smothering the flame. I have to dump off the molten wax. Am I using too small of a wick? Would doubling the...

    The Mountain Men

Not sure if this is the correct place, but just got back from "Dollar General" with an $8 DVD of "The Mountain Men". Been checking discount bins for a while and they had several. Trying to build a collection...

    Source of possible Tow?

Not sure what it's called or if it's been covered here. The hanging plant baskets (wire style) have a thick brown mat at the bottom. I was saving some to try, but haven't had the chance in actual fire starting. I did have to retrieve it after a neighbors dog tried to run away with it. Carrying...

.45 Southern homemade does it again.

This is the rifle I talked of a few posts ago. Finally got a pic to use on a doe from this weekend. Duh, use the camera on the cell phone....... It was a nice size, older doe that is being donated to a family that seriously needs it.

    Southern .45 Made Meat

Muzzleloading season opened around here for parts of Michigan. My dad and I went to the huntin' grounds to find something to fill the doe tags with. Haven't been seeing much this season, 'cept for deer 600 yds. away. Well, last night, after checking behind me, etc. I turned back forward and saw...

    Muzzle Loader Kits

I am a cadet counselor and am in the need for 3 muzzle loader kits for my cadets. The prices I've seen are quite high, not including shipping. CVA doesn't make a kit anymore. Traditions has the corner on the market-or am I overlooking another maker? The kits I've seen are $310 w/o shipping. The...

    First muzzleloader whitetail

I got a T/C Hawken in a .54 one Christmas from my parents. This was many years ago. I made what I could to go with it, at the time. The first separate season for muzzleloading that Michigan had, I was all over it! I went to the "farm" by myself and got out way too early. I was cold by the time...
