    Late season NY doe.

Cold and windy here today. I don't really care for the wind, but only have so many days to hunt, so I went to the most sheltered location I could think of, in a hedge row overlooking a field. It was chilly but I was bundled up and the sun felt amazingly warm. About 3:30pm, I caught movement...

    8 pt.

First day of late muzzleloader season here in NY. Treated to a fresh snow, which I absolutely go crazy to hunt in. I saw this deer rubbing on a tree appx 70 yards away in heavy brush. About 15 minutes later I took a quartering to shot, at about 40 yards. High shoulder shot dropped him in his...

    Flint for striker.

Where do you guys buy your flint for using with a striker? I started to learn blacksmithing and want to give strikers with flint to friends and family. I get good sparks with my Siler sized flints, but they are kinda small to hold onto. Would a musket flint work better?

    Flame Maple?

Anybody have any pics of what would be considered flame maple? I just purchased a rifle, sight unseen, and it was described as real pretty with flame maple. This isn't the first rifle I purchased from this gent, the first two were better than described, and I have no reason to believe this...

    Siler, or deluxe Siler?

For those of you who have had experience with both, which would you prefer? They sell for the same price so to my way of thinking I'd lean toward the deluxe, but I haven't used a deluxe yet. I'm trying to decide for my next rifle. Thanks.

    T/C Cherokee tumbler?

Anyone know where I might be able to find a tumbler for a cherokee lock? Im thinking that's what the part is called. There is a piece broken off it that makes half cock a dicey proposition. Thanks.

    Small game with smoothbore pistol?

Does anyone have experience with a smoothbore pistol and shot loads for small game? I'm wondering if this may be an option for rabbits in thick brush, or if there just isn't enough energy, pattern problems etc, with the short barrel. I appreciate any of your experiences. Thank you.

Im just a 10 year old at heart.

I had a fantastic experience last week on a rainy/snowy day, and taking a great doe with my plains pistol. Black powder season here in NY only goes for 9 days, and I'm not complaining, but these are the 9 days that I work the rest of the year for. Yesterday was a family commitment day. Today...

    Plains pistol doe.

Monday was the opener of BP season here in NY. I came off a night shift, slept a couple hours and spent the afternoon to a deerless field. Yesterday was another OT shift. Today I went out in the rain in the morning. I am not good enough with my flinter to attempt to hunt in the rain, so I...

    Need caps?

I just placed an order for some #11's. I have no prior experience dealing with these folks, but the price seems quite reasonable, and they HAVE them in stock, wow. Hope this helps some of you. http://store.thirdgenerationshootingsupply.com/browse.cfm/2,4238.html/

    Just a general shooting question?

I have never shot my black powder guns with anybody. My boy is shooting with me now, and both of us would like to attend some of the upcoming local shoots in the area. We are especially looking forward to a woods walk type shoot. I am looking forward to learning from more experienced shooters...

    I have a shooting partner!

A while ago I made a post about bp arms for young shooters. Another member pm'd me about a gun he had, that he used for his daughter. A traditions deer hunter scout, .50 cal, with a 12.5"lop. I bought this gun and gave it to my 9yo son for Christmas. Today we got out to shoot it. He shot...

    Change over to bunnies.

Deer season ended Tuesday, and my freezer is sitting pretty well. Sadie, my beagle, has been on standby, waiting for today. We have about 10" of snow on the ground, but it warmed up to about 40 degrees today with a mild South wind. Made sure my .50 rifle was spotless, and oiled up, and put...

    KIK powder review?

I tried the search function and can only find a couple of posts with nothing bad to say about KIK black powder, but no threads. About to place an order and see the KIK is a dollar or so cheaper than Goex, which is all I've ever used up to now. Does anyone have any experience they can...

    2nd flint deer, I'm done.

It snowed here all day yesterday, and left us with about 8" of fluffy powder. Sometimes we go years here without getting to hunt deer in the snow. Not today. I spent the morning digging myself, and a neighbor out. He's older and really appreciates the help, and its the least I can do...

    Some gear I made.

[/img] [/img] [/img] [/img] Had some success recently on a hunt and it caused me to reflect a bit on my gear. Not very impressive compared to some of the craftsmen we have on this forum, but it worked well for me, and at this point I'm quite happy with it. My bag is a run of the...

    Got my deer

3rd day of bp season here in NY. I took the week off to spend some time with the rifle I built this year, and to see if I could finally complete it by taking a nice fat doe. I made a makeshift blind in the midst of a few small Christmas trees. It was nice and cozy because I was somewhat...

Dry patch and hunting, not working for me.

Ok, still learning this game. The majority of my experience has been with T/C's, shooting prelubed patches. That worked well enough that I graduated into flinters. Now I have a round ball flint gun, with the deep groove rifling. It has been shooting well using the dry patch method with 6/1...

    Improving flints?

Rifleman, your gonna love this(from our previous exchange) . I'm learning this flint game as I go. I have a pretty good stock of new flints, black english. I have been having a bit of trouble holding them in the jaws. Or they hold fine, but as they wear and you try to move them forward...

    Frizzen education, please.

Forgive me, for I may be making things harder than they have to be, a road I know well. Here are some pictures of my frizzen on a Siler lock. This lock has about 20 shots on it so far. Yesterday, I had a few failures to ignite the pan, which is fine, cause it helps me to see if I'm developing...
