Making a double barreled flint shotgun

Is this the thread you were thinking of? http://www.muzzleloadingforum.com/fusionbb/showtopic.php?tid/296229/fromsearch/1/tp/1/

Another quirky load for dense patterns

I've got some scraps of real thick leather I will try. I've been wanting to experiment with 3F too, so I'll try that combo and see what it does. Thanks!

Another quirky load for dense patterns

Alright, I did a whole bunch more shooting today and basically ended up back where I started. I described the gun in my previous post, but for those who didn't see that - it is a 12 gauge double flintlock choked mod. and full. I've moved from #6 shot to #4 shot and I am shooting some pretty...

Another quirky load for dense patterns

The cups are pretty flat on the bottom. I'd have to check the bag to be certain, but I think they are the BP12 wads from Ballistic Products. They are a little smaller in diameter than normal wads, so they fit down the choked barrels without to much issue. I've got a roll of 36" wide craft...

Another quirky load for dense patterns

Hi Guys and Gals, I wanted to share my most recent patterning tests. I am shooting a 12 ga, double barrel, flintlock that I built last summer. The barrels are oldish (I am a guessing early 1900's) and they are choked modified and full. When I worked on (machining and engraving) them they felt...

    Bore Rust Colrain Barrels

Yup, I'd add WD-40 to your steps. Swab it out and then use a better bore oil. I use CLP but there are tons that will work fine. I use a little simple green in my cleaning water. Not sure if it helps or not. I'm not so sure about the hydrogen peroxide idea. I know it can be used to...

Looking for load info for specific barrel

I've got several 54's. Some like FF and some like FFF. When I sight a new one in I start at 80 grains and work up in 5 grain intervals. All of my guns have ended up between 80 and 95 grains. I prefer the .530 balls with thicker patches.

LOL. I hadn't checked this particular board lately so I missed this posting. Wonderful knife and sheath Wick. :hatsoff:

    New Movie The Revenant?

I'll definitely go see it. I don't watch Hollywood stuff to learn about history, I go for entertainment. Hopefully it will provide some of that.

    Slo-mo Birdshot

I think you're right. I think the wad must fall away pretty quickly, distance wise. I wish there was some sort of scale on the video. The thing that I found interesting is how much shot is behind the wad and around the wad as it flew. Since the wad weighs so much more than any individual...

    Slo-mo Birdshot

Have we seen this video before? Obviously modern components, but it's interesting to watch the wad interact with the shot string. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SqfyysHejxk Comments? (If the link doesn't work - search "slow motion shotgun shots" on youtube)

Build ml shotgun from modern barrels

I just did a double last summer. The main advice I can give is to buy a junked set of barrels first and practice breeching them first. Getting the chambers cut to the diameter needed for threading takes some real finesse with normal workshop tools. You'll need to devise a set up where you can...

    Clay Smith Smootbores

(disclaimer!) Clay and I work together quite a bit and he helps me sell some of my guns. I have built a few of his kits and they go together quite well. The inlets will need some enlarging to get things to fit, like most other kits. He uses good components, especially his brass parts are a...

    Waterfowl Hunting Loads

M Dalton, I use a regular kayak paddle. It has those rubber cups on the handle which helps to keep some of the drips off of me. I still get some drips though. I sit with the butt of gun resting on my shooting bag between my legs - muzzle pointed towards the bow. I have a piece of waxed elk...

    Waterfowl Hunting Loads

I hunt wood ducks out of a kayak. I drift down creeks and jump shoot them so the shots tend to be pretty close. Max would be 30 yds, but lots of my shots are 20 yds or so. I use a 12 gauge double flinter that I built. It has 30 inch modern (early 1900's)barrels that are choked modified and a...

Help picking a style of rifle

Mac - double check, but I don't think that Tip will be there on Monday the 15th. Friendship is going on for another week, and I suspect that he will be there. Hopefully someone who knows for sure will chime in.

Looking for a precarved stock for swamped rice barrel

Those are all good suggestions. I've had great luck with all three. My only addition is you might want to order it without the lock inlet being cut. Having the lock mortise cut can sometimes make the build a little more difficult. Do it yourself, as this leaves more flexibility in your...

    How clean is "clean"

I was wondering if it might be the oil cutting properties that did it. Maybe a lot of this dirt is clinging to the barrel in the layer of oil in the steel's pores? Either way - it worked great. I wiped the last of it out with dry patches and oiled her up with CLP.

    How clean is "clean"

I had an interesting experience the other night while cleaning a smoothbore. I was experiencing the normal issues of getting a smoothbore clean when I tried some lacquer thinner on a patch. One swipe up and down and it took the last of the crud out. This is a new double flint 12 gauge that I...
