I doubt it with the long tang, trigger assembly and trigger guard all to be removed, etc. Does the line continue down below the point of the flat, at the checkering? it looks to stop.
Looks like two pieces of wood were joined together then the stock was made with checkering to cover the joint. Unfortunately the joint didn’t hold. A wild guess, not a fact!

I’ll go along with Phil, looks like an animal glue joint that gave; would be interesting to see under the relative metal work if there are any strengthening inserts.
