A SMALL TRICK
With the Lyman rear aperture sight you eye automatically centers as it seeks the most light
The front Globe sight comes with a number of insert displaying posts or rings.
There is on ring that at 50 yards is the exact same size as a black 3 inch target.
If your sight picture shows only black it means you are very much dead center on that target left and right, up or down you are Right On.If your riffle is twerked to where you are capable of one hole groups you will get them with that insert and that target.
After a while you get so used to that front globe sight you will enjoy shooting with no inserts at all.
I'm not sure if that would be cheating but it's fun unfriendly competition.

IT FITS SO CLOSELY THAT ANY MOVEMENT IN ANY DIRECTION WILL SHOW A WHITE RIM. IF IT'S DEAD CENTERED NO WHITE WILL SHOW.
THIS WAS THE KIND OF SHOOTING THAT CONVINCED A NUMBER OF NEWBIES THAT MUZZLELOADERS WERE MORE ACCURATE THAN THE SUPPOSITORY RIFLES. AND WHEN TWITCHED ONE WAY AND ANOTHER THEY CAN BE, DUTCH

Doc,
Got to disagree a little on this one. You actually want you aperture (Insert) slightly larger than the black bull relative to how steady you can hold the rifle. In competition shooting with unmentionable small-bore rifles a lot of shooters will use a size 3.2 aperture for prone giving a little white around the black to make sure their sights are centered, slightly larger for kneeling using a 3.4 and larger still for standing with a 3.6. This way as you wobble you can hold the bull in the sights.
Try the technique you mentioned above but being able to see a little white and you will probably see better results.

THIS IS WHY WE HAVE HORSE RACES.
THE INSERT I SPOKE OF FITS EXACTLY TO A 3 INCH BLACK TARGET.
IF YOU SEE ANY WHITE RIM AT ALL YOU ARE OFF CENTER In MY experience with MY globe sight.
Your equipment must be a hair different.
Things like this nit picky little trick, for me, made shooting fun.
Thanks for your commentary.

Works for me Doc! These are the kind of discussions with some good whiskey and a fire that make shooting so much fun!!

Many newbie shooters that graduate to the aperture sight make the common mistake of thinking that if they 'close down' the front aperture ring to match the size of the bull that this is the way to go! I can tell you for certain that this isn't the way to go.....not for NRA High Power competition or any competition including outdoor smallbore shooting which was .22 long rifle! If the front aperture ring is closed down tightly around the bullseye the eye cannot detect any error in aiming whereas if there is an area of white around the bull say of 2/3 more than the size of the bull....the eye can easily pick up the error in concentricity! The bull diameter in NRA HP shooting was 13" diameter and I as well as many other High Master shooters would use a front aperture ring of 3.8 or 4.0 size. The human eye can detect concentricity extremely well as long as there is a large enough area of white around the bull but not otherwise!

I agree with you IF THE INSERT YOU ARE USING does not fit exactly. It's just a coincidence that the Lyman insert ditsexactly.

For most of us the front sight aperture will not be exactly the apparent diameter of the target bull. Therefore most instruction target shooters will be to have as many circles as possible. The procedure to shoot using a white circle around the black target bull is often easier for target shooters to use to get top accuracy. While Dutch had a perfect match of aperture and bull at 50 yards and was able to shoot excellent groups, he may have had more variance at 25 yards with more of the black covered by the aperture.

The real trick to aperture sights is that the rear sight aperture acts as a pin hole camera and puts the front sight in focus. If the front sight is in focus, our eyes will line the circles up and keep them centered even if the rear sight and the target are slightly blurry.
