    What tools are needed for Beginner Project?

    Thanks Zonie, as usual a very helpful post/reply. Perhaps Kevin and Spot will give me some hints too. I'll be moving tomorrow (Michigan to Virginia) and won't have my computer until probably the end of next week. So, please bear with me if I don't reply for a while.

    What tools are needed for Beginner Project?

    O.K. guys, so I'd like to build a Lyman GPR percussion in .54cal. The posts by Kevin, Spot Shooter, and your recommendations are to "blame" for this. :winking: Now the big question: What kind of tools do I need to complete this project? Keep in mind that I don't have a workshop...I'll be...

    Is Lyman GPR and Cabelas' Hawken the same ?

    Thanks for your input guys! rollingb: I didn't have any bad experience with a Lyman gun (in fact I've never owned one yet) but I did have a bad experience with the Cabela's Sporterized Hawken Carbine. The problem was as I described...ruined clean out screw (real flimsy) and HORRIBLE accuracy...

    Is Lyman GPR and Cabelas' Hawken the same ?

    I just noticed that the Lyman GPR and Cabela's Hawkens look rather similar around the drum area. Are these made by the same company? I've had one of the Cabelas' Sporterized Hawkens before and didn't have a good experience with it. The clean out screw in the drum was ruined after removing it...

    Lyman GPR: which one?

    I'd like to buy a Lyman Great Plains Rifle, percussion in .54 cal. Which version would you recommend for accuracy: the 1 in 60" twist or the faster 1 in 32" Hunter twist? This would be my designated deer hunting rife but I think I would be shooting patched round balls in my hunting loads. I...

    Pillow ticking for patches

    Can any of you give me tips on how to mike the thickness of this ticking? I seems that I get different thicknesses depending on how hard I push on the caliper. What's the right way to measure this?

    Pillow ticking strips--how wide?

    How wide do you guys cut your pillow ticking strips from the bulk ticking material? I am shooting a .36cal and a .45cal, so how wide should I cut the strips for these calibers? Thanks!

    "Clenzoil": feedback sought

    Doublegun: My experience with the Kenockee Tradin' Post has been very positive. The husband and wife (Mr. and Mrs. Morgan)owners are very knowledgable. Also, Mr. Morgan makes some excellent accessories in his machine shop: I'm very happy with his jags, and especially his sights which are...

    "Clenzoil": feedback sought

    Thanks for your feedback guys-- "DOUBLEGUN": which shop in Michigan told you about Clenzoil? The Kenockee Tradin' Post in Avoca, Michigan was the one that recommended it to me. "MUSKETMAN": sounds like you've been using Clenzoil and seem to like it. Have you experienced any gumming in the...

    Black Powder/ML Shops in Virginia

    I am relocating to northern Virginia (Fairfax area) and would appreciate any help in locating some shops in the area. In Michigan we have some real traditional "Trading Posts" and this is what I'm looking for--just a really well stocked traditional muzzle loading shop staffed by very...

    "Clenzoil": feedback sought

    Have any of you tried a product called "Clenzoil"? The black powder shop I go to really recommended it as a rust preventative and stock maintenance oil. Any input would be appreciated.

    Pillow ticking for patches

    Hi guys, I'm new to this forum and really enjoy reading your input. Today I bought 2 yards of pillow ticking (white w/blue stripes) at a fabrics store--I think it was JoAnn Fabrics. Anyway, do you recommend washing it or do I just use it the way it is? The reason I ask is when I bought some...
