Those destructive things are supposed to be only one county east of here. They are also reported in west KY. Although they would provide some offseason hunting, I hope they never make to this neck of the woods.

Nice shooting on the paper target but I can't see the hole in the birdy. Did the feathers cover the holes up?
He's still flying around, ETipp. That species is protected by wildlife legislation these days. I reckon if Grandma was still with us, he and seven others of his type may have been in strife! What that lady could turn into gastronomic delights was commendable.Cheers, Pete

Thanks TDM. I'll stop by Wally world and pick up some 90% alcohol on my way to the range today and try that. You know, I noticed after I cleaned the barrel in hot water and soap that when I ran a patch with ballistol down the barrel it got a sort of 'vapor lock' and the ram rod got stuck with the patch bottomed out in the barrel. I had to get my son to help get it out (held end of ram rod in vise and pulled it on the gun). Ever happen to you?
How would you get "vapor lock" in a gun barrel with a hole in both ends?

Well it's strange. It's like a strong vacuum - you can pull real hard and maybe get it to move 1/2" or so, but when your grip slips the suction pulls the ramrod right back down and locks it in tighter than ever. My son couldn't pull it out and he doesn't have arthritis in his hands (and it's hard to get a strong grip on a ~3/8" diameter wooden rod sanded smooth). I'm baffled...

Been thinking (I know, right...) and here's what could be happening: the oil-soaked patch, which is 2" round, wraps itself around the jag and conforms to the inside of the barrel extending for about an inch. This may be enough length to cover the fire hole and block it off so that now there is effectively only one hole in the end of the barrel when the patch is at the bottom of the barrel. Best I could come up with...

I agree except that while trying to ascertain whether there was a stuck ball down the barrel I had my son insert a pipe cleaner in the flash hole while I looked down the barrel - I could definitely see the end of the white pipe cleaner and saw him withdraw it too. Then I inserted the pipe cleaner for him to see and watch me withdraw it. We both agreed that there couldn't be a ball in the barrel so I immediately cleaned the barrel in hot soapy water and got a good surging action through the touch hole. I let it dry until just slightly warm and proceeded to use the Ballistal on a patch to lube up the inside of the barrel (which is when the 'vapor-lock' occurred).

Maybe a small bit of fouling got lodged in the clean out/nipple vent area. Unless the problem repeats itself, you may never know for sure.

Well you never know. That innocent looking little birdy could very well be a trained attack bird that can do a person great bodily harm. You best be prepared over there, protected or not.

I got a new to me Crockett Saturday. Shot it Sunday. Had no nipple wrench that would fit it. Found one on eBay made for the Crockett. It came in today. Not even close to fitting. Took the gun down the road to a friends shop. He made one to fit and I got it out. I’m quite sure this gun was drilled and tapped for this nipple. It’s 1/4x28 threads. Anyhow it’s out and now I can clean it properly. I have a new nipple ordered but I’m sure it won’t be right and I’ll have to order a different one.
Jim, I use a small 13/64 fractional open end wrench. Its small and fits the Crockett rifle nipple well. I proper size nipple wrench would be best IF one desires to keep the stock nipple.
However, I have found that the stock nipple is too small for number 11 caps. They can and will fall off very easy. I'm getting ready to order a different one.
