Strange you should mention that Dave, I was thinking the same thing when I was watching a hunting show the other day. The guy was shooting a modern scoped black thingy that was good to 300 yards but just happened to be loaded through the muzzle, he called it his "smoke pole".
I never liked the term, considering all the work I have in building my various flintlock rifles and smoothbores calling one a "smoke pole" is a slap in the face to me.
I refer to my M/Ls by name; it might be my Beck, Bogle, TN .40, Kibler SMR, fowler or trade gun but never a smokepole.
People latch onto speech patterns or words and they spread like wildfire. The words "basically" or "like" are prime examples, some people use these words in almost every sentence now.
The "in" word for tv show hunters hunters now is the word "baby", as in "that is what I am talking about BABY", sickening. "That is what I am talking about" is another phrase people use that makes no sense but they heard someone say it and adopted the phrase.
Another is calling a huge deer a "toad" or saying "I smoked him" when they make a good shot.
People quickly adopt these words and phrases and add them to their vocabulary, I guess it is just a human thing that can't be avoided.
