Anybody use there muzzleloaders for home defence?
I use a 1858 remington army and a .54 hawkins for
my protection.

NOT I,,

I want something more reliable,
if my family's or my life's is at stake..

I know my .20ga and .45 will be a much more reliable in a gun fight..

However a .50 hole looks big to a peerson in the dark. I prefer mr colts inventions , like a .45 frontier. bob

I might if I thought about it! I do use my Winchester 30-30 though, get em' close and far away! Have thief, will drag em back to the door!

Like the one guy said. I only go back to 1911 in a hand gun. 1897 in a long gun. To much at stake.

This was discussed last year..I'll refrain from a comment this year.

Wife's Mossberg 500, pistol grip and 18 1/2 barrel.
she wears contacts and they are out at night!
point it down the hallway and not bother with "minute of boogee man" accuracy.
it does make a damn impressive sound in the dark however!

For most self Defense situations in a home, a double barrel shotgun with shorter barrels is about a good a choice as you can get. If the lights are on so the bad guys sees the shotgun, that may end the assault right there. You don't need large buckshot in the gun, either. use light trap loads, because at the range you will shoot in most homes, we are talking 10 yards or less, and a pattern no bigger than a 12 inch softball!

For outdoor work, either a pump or Semi-auto shotgun, or a rifle needs to be the first choice. A handgun that you are intimately familiar with is more likely what you will have when you need a gun. Most experts will tell you that you use a handgun to defend yourself while you move to your long gun. I am a better handgun shot than they are, I guess, because I have never felt I was undergunned with the handguns I use for Self Defense. I like the way they are thinking, but I don't necessarily think its a good idea to suggest to people that a handgun is not adequate for the job. I suspect those experts went to the" spray and pray school of pistol shooting ", and have never learned to hit small targets at 200 yds with a handgun.

I used to keep a couple of colt caplocks handy but sold them to buy more gun parts and now have a short double barrel cartridge coach gun with 00 buck handy.I felt quite at easy with the colts around when I had them.

I imagine muzzle flash and smoke from a BP revolver in a dark room must be disturbing. No thanks, .45 or a .38 with wadcutters is enough for me.

I think after shooting, and reviewing what makes these guns tick, they are "acceptable" to use for this purpose.

I believe, that these guns will fire without a hitch, as long as you do your part.

For home defense, I keep around three loaded. I clean, and use a air compressor to insure that all the nipples are good and clear before loading.

Got a .32 baby dragoon on the fridge, 1851 Navy, and 1860 Army on the nightstand.

Loaded and ready to go

I have read and heard many times that a pump shotgun with a short slug barrel is best for home defense. EVERYBODY on earth knows the sound of that slide being racked back, and they know what sort of business is to follow. Heck, the next sound you are likely to hear is the bad guy filling his pants... an effective deterrent before even entering the line of sight.

This talk of deterrents, to me is hogwash! If some stranger is in my house I don't want him to leave alive!

I want to take them all the way out! Shoot first and don't ask any questions at all!
