Refinishing an old CVA

Personally, I kinda like the engraving on the locks on my CVA 12 guage.

My neighbor gave this to me. His dad had tried to build it from a kit back in the '80's and made the typical errors new builders make.

By the time I got it, the outside of the barrels was rusted and the painted on varnish stock looked horrible.

In rebuilding it, I added a steel guide to the barrel channel and a cast checkered steel buttplate.

Here's a link about the steel lug I installed to give the barrels better alignment with the stock.

Thanks Zonie. I see you left the barrels blued, I'm still debating that with mine. Yup, I will definitely refinish the stock, yours looks awesome. I already have one lock and hammer, the trigger group, trigger guard and rear tang filed down and mostly sanded ready to be reinstalled.
The problem I'm having is while I can modify sand and cut already existing parts I'm not a metal smith, I wouldn't know how to go about making a butt plate or that lug you made. Dixie Gun works told me if I make a full size "drawing" of the butt they would make me a butt plate but i have no idea what that would cost, obviously I would have to ask.

Actually, I browned the barrels using LMF browning solution and then converted the brown to black with boiling distilled water.

This process has been known for hundreds of years and is not uncommon.

Ah, it looked blue in the picture. Was thinking about getting some 1/8" steel for the butt plate, cutting and shaping it myself but I have no idea what gage to get so I don't know where to start.

Here's mine "finished", haven't decided whether to leave it as is or brown the barrel.
