@Feltwad why is the pattern stringed in an original? And if so, How did our ancestors consistently take flying game effectively? Are you saying a modern gun like a pedersoli is different or the same as far as the stringed pattern?
All shotguns, regardless of age, string their shot. Smaller bores have a longer string, which is why they're difficult to take game/break clays.
If you don't pattern your gun you have No Clue as to where you're gun hits compared to POA, if there are holes in your load, what a maximum range is.
Most knowledgeable shooters strongly recommend patterning your gun.
