Can any of you builders tell me what to use to thin Permalyn finish, so that I can use it as a sealer?

Thanks Mel

I don't thin it at all. Put it on heavy right out of the can, leave it on for 5 min, take a paper towel & rub it off. It will penetrate what it needs to. Let it dry, rub with 0000 steel wool & vacuum up well, & then apply your finish. The Permalyn also is a good finish & waterproof.

I've used Permalyn on recent gunstocks and I'm very pleased with the results, especially sealing the wood. Some pistol stocks and several knife handles.

I've used shellac previously, but water can get under it, even when covered with polyurethane, turn things may turn brown/ugly.

Permalyn is good for gunstock & knife finishing. I've also tried their dyes for antiquing horns and found them useable.

I don't know what the long term issues may be vs. using RIT dye to age a horn. Maybe both/neither/all will induce a horn to crack?

Maybe beeswax is the best over time?

i used terpentine to thin mine... started out with the permalyn cut about 1:1, in small batches, and used it uppretty much, so i just added less terp for the second coat and so on so the last coat (put on three) was straight.

worked nice - very light sanding between coats and wipe down with a clean dry rag.

mileage may vary, but it worked for me.

make good smoke!

Thanks fellows; I have some Permalyn finish that I don,t use and have used Permalyn sealer under oil varnish and liked it. I didn,t know what to use for thinner. Turpentine it is.
