    16ga. vs.20ga.

I built a 20ga. and like it. But, I should have the Colerain barrel bored to a 16ga. Since there is no perfect gun, the weight of the 20ga.barrel makes for a better smoothbore rifle than the quicker to move lighter 16ga. Now, if the 20ga.was made as a true 20ga. profile, I would say different...

    What Finish

At one time I used BLO. I was told it was traditional so I went that route. Since then ALL guns have been stripped of that finish because I think it is a wretched mess. Others use other products, but for me it is Tru-Oil. I can get any luster I want by dragging the finish when near dry, to high...

    advice on chipped stock

Though I agree with Jerry, I have had fair luck splicing in some wood. Take your time, pick your wood as to grain and iradesents(sp), so that rolling the completed gun in your hand doesn't make a stand out. Leave the patched wood a little proud and carefully work to a fit a any staining. Once...

    Field Loading gear?

I use the powder flasks and shot flasks. It is just so easy for me to use and I am used to it.If you figure how much shooting a hot dove field can get, I want at least 2 lbs.of shot and my gun is patterned for 1 oz.loads.Maybe I shoot to much, but I am having fun!

    Best Elk Rifle?

How long a shot are you capable of? Check the state you would hunt in. Many have a minimum bullet weight, that will take some rd. ball out of the picture.

    Sealing a powder horn

I use sodium silicate also called water glass. It is a clear liquid. Poor it into the horn. Swirl it around and poor out the extra. Water and heat proof. Tried it once with air pressure to the pinned on wooden plug by pressurizing the horn. Took allot of pressure till a joint opened. Allot of...

thoughts on making an SxS shotgun

Jerry, you are correct on the amount of powder. My one PR. of barrels needs 1 1/2 dram to fill the chamber. For me( of course it could be a problem for someone) it just is not a problem on the 16ga. Ithaca Flues barrels I am using. These are very nice Damascus barrels.

thoughts on making an SxS shotgun

Jerry you are right. I have seen where some barrel "converters", cut the chamber area off, then thread for long breeches. This way you get that "flare" removed from the breech of the barrels and can make the locks fit much closer together. You can also make these new and long breeches long...

    shot collars

Everyone can have a different experience. I tried all kinds of wads, homemade paper shot packages or what ever. They just didn't work for me, but they may for you. I went back to the KISS system that worked for a couple 100 yrs. Use an over powder card then for dove and clay shooting it is a...

    Lefty Jaeger Build

Agreed. I have refit more than a few locks to change their plate configuration. Many times a stock Chambers lock is closer to being correct, than you first thought. Some filing here and there, some tig welding and a little reshaping and you have it.

james allen double barrel 10 gage

Of course the barrels are everything. I have fixed cracked stocks such as this, turned new barrel thimbles and sweat them on and tig welded hammers to make as new. Cost effective? Maybe not,it was a labor of love I have done several times.Stay with the no.11 caps, you will be much happier you...

    sloppy inletting repair

Weld it. JB Weld looks like you used JB Weld. Weld it, dress it and done.

I like the color. It came out looking great.

Tip Curtis Lancaster Kit Part II

I have exactly the same problem. I like the color, until I am finish coats into it. Then it seems to get lighter. I have yet to get one too dark. JMHO

    TC Hawken

I never ever worry about breaking a lock. The locks were made by man and can be repaired by man. If it ever needs repaired.Maybe that is why I don't worry about some of the original guns either. Some guy made them 200 yrs.ago and some one can fix them, if they need it.

    discoloration in barrel

I am with GreenMt. My original shotguns have discoloration in the bores. I lapped them the best I could. They are very smooth, but discolored. I shoot them and love them. Sure it would be awesome if they looked as new. But the clay, doves and turkey love the patina of original guns. Lol

    How accurate are your smoothbores?

Spense, I think the same as you. My grps. are 3-4" at 50yds. But at 100yds. I open my GRP. To about 12". Is it me? I am using the slot of the tang screw for a rear sight. It just can't be the most accurate sight picture.
