    Pietta 1858 C&B - Painful to shoot

I learned to shoot all revolvers that way so, I naturally grip it with pinky finger under the the grip. I was gifted a cartridge conversion cylinder for my latest birthday and loaded a smokeless cartridge recipe that develops 700 to 800 FPS. One would think that load would be safe with mild...

    Pietta 1858 C&B - Painful to shoot

I really like my cap and ball Remington replica but, every time I fire it, the trigger guard hits the middle knuckle of my middle finger in recoil. Last time at the range I got a nasty blister (yes, too dumb or determined ....maybe both, to quit). Now, every time I think about taking it out...

    Replacing my barrel

I'm amazed at what these barrels will do when their condition would indicate junk. You would not believe what the bore of my old barrel looks like. It is the very definition of "sewer pipe" but, it would shoot 2" groups at 50yds with the right combo of RB, patch, and lube. The spent patches...

    Replacing my barrel

Great advice Dutch. Not being the brightest bulb in the chandelier, I bought mine from an on-line auction site. So, I didn't have an opportunity to do a hands-on inspection. The seller said it had "some pitting near the muzzle". That's the longest dang muzzle I've ever seen. :) I should...

    Replacing my barrel

I replaced my barrel because the one that came with this used rifle was so badly pitted it was tearing a hole in the patches regardless of the material or thickness or lube. I bought the current barrel new from Deer Creek and am very happy with it so far. In the future, I may have the old...

    Replacing my barrel

Hi Dutch, thanks for the info. I am weighing the cast RB and getting a variety of weights. My first group of about 140 balls produced 2 weight groups ...181 to 181.9 grain and 182 to 183. I have not shot any of the "light group" and the "heavy group" results are not quite as accurate as...

    Replacing my barrel

Accuracy is getting better. I've been shooting .495 swaged RB from Hornady with good results. I cut patches at the muzzle and the .011" pillow ticking has been "pre-lubed" with Ballistol an water ...ala Dutch. Following his recipe, I wipe between shots using a different Ballistol and water...

    Accidently Bought a Rifle

I think so too. On Oct. 1, I finished 2nd in my first local monthly club match and was pleasantly surprised. I had not shot this rifle at 25yds or 75yds and this match had targets at both distances. This was also the first time I fired this rifle off-hand (25yds). The FUN has begun. :)

    Accidently Bought a Rifle

Wow, didn't realize I haven't updated this thread in so long. Time flys when you're having fun they say. :) The barrel has been replaced with a new one from Deer Creek. The barrel came with all holes drilled and dovetails cut. I removed the sights from the old barrel and mounted them on the...

    Replacing my barrel

First trip to the range with the new barrel was last Friday (9/1). Accuracy is promising ....first few hits were about 3" high and 3" right and the last 3 were appox. 1" high with windage right on. Sights appear to be "on" so, the next trip I'll work on adjusting components for better accuracy.

where to get a .50 cal barrel re-rifled

Please tell us what you find out about the difference in the plug. Sure looks strange in the picture. Barrel looks good and the price is definitely fair IMO. Will Mr. Hoyt work on Spanish barrels, as in CVA?

    Long Range Match Shooting

Hi Bill, Yes, I've seen that video. Not sure if the Civil War soldier got "lucky" or if he regularly performed such feats but, we do know it can be done with similar equipment. (see David Minshall's post above) I doubt the soldier did it with a PRB. He was likely shooting a Minni'e since...

On the "correct alloy" scale, where do Traditions stainless nipples line up?

Looked all over my new barrel and it doesn't say Spain but, it does say Connecticut Valley Arms Inc. ???

Thanks for this quote. Would like to know who the author is so I can credit him/her when I use it. :)

    Long Range Match Shooting

Did you read this part ....."saw a Union soldier moving" ..... It wasn't written as if it were a "target rich" environment. This event is also reported in other articles and they all read as if a single union soldier was targeted. I tend to believe multiple authors who agree on one event. Was...

    Long Range Match Shooting

There are historical reports of Civil War snipers hitting their targets (and killing the victim) at more than 1300 yds. From an article written by Logan Nye Oct. 29, 09:10 AM "On Dec. 5 an unidentified Confederate soldier in Fort Sumter saw a Union soldier moving in Battery Gregg, 1390 yards...

An excellent reason to buy CVA sidelocks. :)

    Replacing my barrel

CVA Hawken 28", 1-48" twist in-the-white, hooked breech. All holes are drilled and tapped and all dovetails are cut. I need to clean it thoroughly, apply the bluing, and transfer all accessories (sights, under-rib, etc.) This is truly a "drop in" replacement ...except for the bluing. The...

    Replacing my barrel

My new barrel arrived this afternoon and it's in excellent condition. Deer Creek comes through again. Can hardly wait to get it blued, mounted and shooting. :)
