    New DeerStalker Question

You said you don't like the stock color. I found my Lyman GPR to be too dark. I rubbed it lightly with a rag and alcohol and got it a shade or two lighter. Not a woodworker but I don't know any other way to change it but strip the finish and start over. Not worth it to me.

    Loading .45 Pedersoli Kentucky pistol

I have the same pistol in .50 cal. First the factory trigger pull was ridiculous, about 12 lb or higher. I did not want to work on a new trigger so I took the lock out and got some good lube in the trigger mech. Continued dry firing into a heavily wadded cloth. Smoothed it out to a much more...

    eroded nipple effect on accuracy?

While I don't hunt with rb's let me give you an idea of their penetration abilities. A friend and I were shooting a Ruger OA at a scrub 4" sapling at about 25 yds. A .457 rb ahead of 35-40 gr 3F was barely held in the splintered backside of that sapling. I'm guessing that a deer shoulder is no...

    T/C hawken

It would seen T/C settled on 1:48 barrels as a good compromise for both prb's and conicals. Usually gave better than acceptable accuracy for its intended purpose of putting big holes in large critters. Mine liked Maxi's better than rb's and I prefer conicals to rb's just because I find them...

    poor accuracy with T/C hawken

I've had my T/C .50 since the 70's. Great accurate rifle and very well made. Shoots Maxi's very well so I never had reason to switch. I liked the idea that shooting was more straight forward without trying different balls and patches. what you're using right now is certainly working for deer and...

    Pedersoli Kentucky Pistol

I have the Kentucky in .50 percussion. The fit and finish are as good as any I've owned. Had to go down to a .480 ball to get it down the barrel with a patch. The out of the box trigger was horrible and while I don't have a guage I'd have to judge it broke at 12 lbs or higher. I don't work on...

    T/C Hawken accuracy

Well Dutch that is indeed a nice sentiment. But the more low brow answer is that I prefer my brews with "more hops" , as in IPA's and incredibly hoppy ales. While a lot of talk here revolves around xx grs. and fps , I prefer a tight group of high IBU brews (International Bitter Units).

    T/C Hawken accuracy

Dutch you should go to bed or wake up every morning with a smile on your face knowing that you have made a positive contribution the shooting world that you love. And doing it while being a gentleman. God bless you.

    Lead conicals in lyman trade

I have a Deerstalker (1:48) and GP Hunter (1:32), both in .54 cal. Both are very accurate and devastating on PA whitetails. My comfort zone is about 70 yards with open sights and a tree rest. With the longer barrel GPH I have shot groups off a bench that are absolutely tight enough for deer hunting.

    Peep on .40 Squirrel Rifle

Wow, sights are a matter of individuals all seeing a little different. The various sight types are based on what has worked best for the most shooters over the years. Also by particular type of shooting whether target, hunting etc. Also, what worked when we were younger may not work as well as...

    Lyman quality?

I have several older Lymans in 50, 54, flint and cap. I personally like the GPH in .54 with T/C Maxis (I stocked up). I also like the Deerstalker for heavy woods. It's light, points well and is like a black powder carbine IMO. Both rifles are very accurate. I put the Lyman peeps on my GPH and...

how many guns to the range?

If I'm checking sights before season opening on guns that are already sighted in, I might take two. Other than that, one is more than enough for me. If I'm working up a new load or sighting in a new rifle, then that one gun gets all of my attention.

    waterless flintlock cleaning

There are many ways to get a ML clean. Use what you feel works best for you. For me, I've been pulling the barrels on my hooked breech guns and using water for over 30 years. No rust and all are clean to the flash channel. Only difference is that after reading here I no longer use hot water. I...

    typs of nipples

I replaced all of my Lyman nipples with RMC. I found that some brands of caps did not seat well on the stock nips even with firm pressure. They would seat down on the first hammer strike and go off with second. Now no problem.

    Do Not Purchase Lyman Products!!!

I have had mixed experiences with Lyman. If it's something they have in stock, I've found service to be good and reliable. If it's not, then the wait can be unacceptable. I tried to order the peep sight for my Deerstalker and after 5 months cancelled the order. The polite lady on the phone said...

    # 10 Caps

I kept getting pitched a shut out every time I went to the local sporting goods store for caps. They had craploads of inline primers but never caps. I finally broke down and bought 1000 on line and bit the bullet (sorry) on the $20.00 hazmat fee. I don't expect to buy caps for a long time as I...

Thanks for the correction Spence. I forgot about them being smoothies.

    double ball

I remember reading somewhere that during the Rev War (?) some infantry used to load a "buck and ball" load. I'm not sure that I have that named correctly, but the idea was that you had one bore size ball and two smaller ones. Made sense due to soldiers being lined up. You had a better chance of...

IF you had only one caliber to choose

Well... I like 50 cal for its variety of availability of rifles and projectiles. However, I'm kind of partial to .54 because I just LOVE that huge bore, big boom and I like throwin' big chunks of lead. Have to admit, though that I never owned a smoothie.

    #11 caps falling off nipple

I have quite a few percussion guns and have had various brands of caps over the years. I find too tight or too loose can be a problem with different combinations of nipple brands and cap brands. Given my choice I'd rather have them loose because I can crimp them to get a better fit. Too tight...
