Britsmoothy wondered aloud on another thread why smoothbores are not more popular. I answered that I didn't know.

I think a lot of it has to do with our perception of the Frontier Rifleman, his mythical shots at great distances, the stated preference among NA for rifles, even the dread of losing the chance at the buck of a lifetime because he showed up just out of range of the smoothbore....

But there were a lot of smoothbores around way back, they had advantages in a fight (as well as versatility for hunting), and the buck of my lifetime was unscathed by my rifle shot at far less than 100 yards (not buck fever, an intervening tree trunk).

Each time I read one of these threads, I feel like I'm missing out on a lot of enjoyment not having a smoothbore.

Well, at least I'm getting the enjoyment of reading about your enjoyment.

Well put brother. I'm much the same. A friend of mine once told me that I was maturing as a sportsman. Boy that was a relief, I thought I was just getting lazy!
