18th century British Army regulations, and remember these were also used by some/most British American Militia/Provincials and later American Regulars in the AWI, called for the lock to be removed every time the Muskets were cleaned. The Private Soldiers were expected to keep "a rag with a little oil on it" to wipe/clean/oil the inside parts of the lock.
Since we shoot a LOT of blank rounds at a reenactment with flintlocks, yes, I pull the lock to clean the insides after a weekend event and as soon as I get home, if not during the weekend.
Also pulled the lock after a weekend Live Round Target Match to clean the interior of the lock, if I did not do it each night during the weekend.
