From the 1780s shooting flying became more popular and to accommodate this we saw the increase of the double barrel flintlock gun with a shorter barrels There was also a improvement in black powder which did not need a long barrel to burn the powder , it was not only in England that the short barrel sporting gun became popular but also in Europe ,
These guns were built by top English gun makers such has John Manton with 30 inch Damascus barrels mostly in a small bore size of 20 bore, this was the most common . There was also a small bore gun with a shorter barrel known has covert gun mostly used for woodcock shooting in wooded areas ,this type of gun was carried on into the percussion era
I have enclosed images of a stand of mostly English double barrel sporting guns which may be of interest to members
