Why do folks swap out the barrels on the TC's? Are Green Mountain that much better? never owned one so asking, not being a wise arse. Was always under the impression TC barrels were very good.
The rifling groove depth on many of the TC barrels is very shallow - like .004 - .005, I believe. The Green Mountain barrels are closer to .012. Additionally, the GM barrels are 32" long vs. TC's 28". I found that the GM barrels are more consistent shot placement when other factors are the same.

Mine made a night and day difference in round ball accuracy. Some of that could be the longer sight radius, but I believe most of it is due to better / more appropriate 'round ball' rifling design. After the GM barrel swap, the TC was more accurate than my GPR. YMMV

Well , glad i read all the replies before i re-stated everything already here . However , shot a friend's .50 GM 32" drop in barrel , and duly impressed with accuracy over that of the shorter T/C .50 i own since 1987 .

I will take that. Great display!
Believe you found yourself a TC with a great barrel.

Curious how you are measuring your TC drop-in GM barrels’ rifling depth? I have owned a number of the GM drop-in roundball barrels (1-66 twist) and all checked at .005” rifling depth (nowhere near .012”) when I slugged the bores. And for what it is worth, all the GM roundball barrels I have used shot great, despite the ‘shallow’ rifling.

I put Douglas barrels on two TCs and turned the factory rifles into very fine target rifles. Matter of choice as is everything in this game.

A friend bought a TC with the easy stary barrel and rifling was .003". Nothing would shoot, no powder, ball, patch, lube or maxi would shoot. After 2 weeks of testing we gave up.
It was a good shotgun but no shot charge, one at a time.
Now my old original TC was a tack driver.
