I have come into possession of a .36 caliber tapered rifle barrel. No markings on it and rusty. What's amazing is the bore is beautiful and shiny. Any information from members would be greatfull. It appears to have been mounted on a full length stock. I've not seen any tapered barrels before. Looks like a washer peep sight on it. Treasure or trash?

I have use some tapered barrels and like them. I ordered 10 from Jerry Cunningham of Orion Rifle Barrel Co. (RR2 137 Cobler Village Road, Kalispell, Montana,. back in the late 80's. I had Jerry Make these barrels to my dimensions (length and taper) for certain style of rifles that I was building. They all did very well.

This one looks to have a fast twist. Need to test it for spec yet.

Nothing wrong with a tapered barrel, the taper is to balance out the weight from breech to muzzle. Some barrels are straight dead weight from end to end with no taper, same with swamped. It’s just a matter of preference, i personally like heavy guns.

Gonna be an inletting challenge for sure. I like a good heavy gun myself.

If the bore is good , and barrel not bent , flint breach it , and build a gun. I found an original 42" long m/l barrel blank sticking up out of a wooden keg , at a flea market , for the princely sum of $35. Sent it to Gasaway W.Va. and had it bored to .50 cal. . Breached it for flint , and inlet it into a maple stock blank. Cut the long heavy barrel off to the minimum 38" , so it was still a "traditional " length for long rifle . I'll put a modified Johnson tang peep sight on the rifle . The whole idea for the project , is to see what an original iron gun barrel will do at the range. Love experimentation.

I'm on team treasure.

I have a tapered 50 caliber Getz barrel. Jake and Sam Hawken and most 19th century rifle makers were using tapered barrels once there was the deep drilling process and mill works to shape the barrels.

Good look at the bore today. Found a workable tang for it. I'm guessing this method of flared holes in the barrel and breach plug helps in timing the mate up.
