Starting a .62 Rifle build

Well, that project came to a quick ending. Lost my temper and smashed the stock into bits.
Oh well….

Perhaps I shouldn't ask but why?.

I was inletting the lock but I hadn’t taken into account the wide mainspring which therefore ran contact with the barrel. It needed to be angled more downward in the front to clear. But by the time I realized that little detail the inletting was too far along. Stupid error. I was so mad at myself that I hit a Home Run with the stock against my work bench leg.
Lesson learned the hard way.

You might have got away by drilling the spring peg lower & maybe file off the catching part half the art of gunmaking is getting round the evitable goolies we manage to make , you might have fettled a bit out of the Barrel but that just a maybe I havn't seen it & the stocks cactus unless good glue will save it .One half made flint gun fell off the wall & broke so I used the airplane glue told the customer if it failed Ile restock it well it didn't, & that's 50 years ago . If at first you don't succeed like Robert the Bruce & the Spider or maybe it was burning the cakes one of them .

Dear Oldwood ,Shooting flat might be a slight exaggeration ?No Suprise it kicked a bit . We don't have any seasons year round is fine due to their deemed' a pest', but they now' graze at 30 mile an hour ' being spooky the only deer that you see from the road are farmed ones .Lorry drivers used to keep a rifle on rural routes to barrel any dim ones & the meat exporters had freezers every so often that bought the meat & the Govt employed Deer cullers to try reduce the numbers hard job for a fit man but they still engage cullers a far cry from the Deer you see on US roads . & I do know US roads

Should I decide to do it again I don’t know (perhaps not); I really don’t need another gun and don’t enjoy marketing them.

Indeed. And the barrel came out great.
Someone else might want the set of parts…

Did you use the Dremel to inlet the lock?

As a follow- up, if I didn’t screw up when I did, the ramrod hole was a headache just waiting to happen. Look how it’s just about 1/16” from the bottom of the stock. That’s not good!
At any rate, I am inching towards getting a new partial blank in Cherry. I really want to see this gun finished. (Getting a good Black Walnut stock is risky sight unseen.)
