it looks sort of dark nickel but I'm not 100%sure about finish or about who made it for them

I remember I had seen display box as an option on Euroarms catalog many years ago and I just found this. So to answer question about the finish, it's London Grey

Very, VERY nice.

I could just imagine a Civil War veteran getting an unissued R&S and having it engraved as a souvenir and then carrying it out west for adventure.

This would make a PHENOMENAL packing piece and deserves a good leather crossdraw.
