My shooting instructor asked me last week if I would be interested in buying a pedersoli 54 cal kentucky flintlock pistol off of him. He had only shot it a few times and it was still in brand new condition. I didnt really know what I would use it for. Then it hit me. Im going on a russian boar hunt in a few months and I wanted to do something to make it a hunt of a lifetime. So I started thinking in my head about maybe using this pistol on the boar hunt. I decided I would buy it and see how it did, and if I could achive enough power and accuracy then I would use it on a hog. I recieved the pistol and was instanted impressed with the quality ! It was a big horse pistol but yet was slim and graceful.
It balanced very well also. I shot it 10 times or so offhand to get the hang of it. It fired quickly and accuratly. Now it was time to get down to the nitty gritty and see just how accurate I could shoot it. I used 40 grains FFg goex powder,.10 patch, and a homecast .530 ball from a lee mold. The target was 25 yards away. I had a rest that i gently set the barrel of the pistol on. I started shooting and found the accuracy to be very very good. I am finding that I have to hold the gun loosly in my hands and not stop the recoil at all, also I have to really watch about keeping my sights dead on so I dont flinch when it goes off. I was very suprised with my first real group from the gun. I was able to shoot 4 shots in a 2 inch group, with 2 just outside to make around a 3 inch group.
here are the bullet holes on the block of wood behind the target
I am extremely happy with the accuracy. I am starting to work up my hog load. I shot it with 60 grains FFg powder and it hit in the same spot as the 40 grain load.now all I have to do is adjust the sights up and right just a little bit. I am definetly gonna use this pistol on a hog. i will have a 54 rifle for back up incase things get a little out of hand, but my goal is to take the hog down with only the pistol. I am going to shoot the pistol alot the next 2 months before the hunt, but im confident I can get the job done. This pistol is awesome. enjoy SS.
