My new powderhorn. Now that I live in Maine and do some Revolutionary War era reenacting, I wanted something appropriate.
Falmouth Neck, today known as Portland. It was burned by British Capt Thomas Mowat in October 1775 as retaliation for "Thompson's War" the previous May, and the capture of the HMS Margaretta at Machias in June.
The Battle of Machias, June 11-12, where the sloop Unity and HMS Margaretta engaged in the first naval battle of the Revolutionary War.
"Self portrait." From Scott Sibley's book.
September 26 is my actual birthday. I live in Brunswick, where Samuel Thompson hailed from. He and his militia caused a few headaches for both sides.
Period "spelling."
Simple pine plug, hand fit, and secured with hand shaped wood pegs, then sealed with beeswax.
All shaping was done by scraping and filing. The spout plug is from the same board as the large plug.
A close up of Falmouth (Portland) as it was in 1775
A nautical chart of the Falmouth area was the source for my map.
A depiction of the Unity and Margaretta.
