Does anyone know of a place I could get some patterns for a possibles bag. I came onto a nice piece of large leather and would like to try building my own. Thanks.

There's a nice small fowler bag pattern right here on the site. My experience is that you'll think it's too small if you're wanting to pack more than shooting gear for the day. You also don't want to use leather heavier than 5 oz, and 3 oz is easier to work with.

TC Albert's book Recreating the 18th Century Hunting Pouch has several excellent patterns, but again the resulting bag may be smaller than lots of folks envision. Watch out for using heavier leather on those, too.

TC's book is an excellent place to start. Once you have made one or two from his patterns you will get the concept and see how easy it is to create your own patterns.

Make your "possibles bag" out of cloth.

Save your leather for a "shooting bag".

What Jack is noting it that a possibles bag was the mountain man's "suitcase" not his hunting/shooting/ball/shot pouch/bag.
The term got mis-interpreted back in the late 1960's and was thus applied to the shot pouch in error. There are really only a couple of so references to a possibles bag in our known historic database and in all cases it is described as something used to carry ones extras, not the daily shooting needs.

As noted above if you're interested in making a period correct shot/hunting pouch as made by "whites" than I too recommend Tim's book on hunting pouches.

send me an email and I will send you a few of my patterns. I use Powerpoint to draw them out on and then print them out. If they work well I transfer that paper pattern onto heavy file folder or card stock.
