While I’m nervous to date a ‘gage d’amour’ to the 18th century I’m 100% sure that neck pouches were used by townies, farmers, native Americans, frontiersmen, and etc.. The tribes men carried a knife or ‘medicine’, fire fixins’ or whatever was needed to be kept close at hand. In an era when pants often didn’t have pockets a pouch around the neck was handy.
This pouch was made by me and as always hand stitched with waxed flax thread. The leather is veg tanned cow, dyed and sealed with my personal preparation. The main body is 5 1/2”X3 1/2”. The welt is edged in pyramids which was a common treatment as it not only strengthens the pouch it helps protect the stitching.
This pouch could hold patching and a few round balls, maybe your pick and whisk set, or coins and folding money. I have paired this pouch with a flint and steel kit. The steel is 2 1/2” inside loop and sparks like a dragon! Comes with a flint shard, hemp fiber and char cloth. Enough to get you up and running for a few fires.
When I’m hunting, hiking or trekking, modern or primitive, I keep a fully stocked flint and steel with me. Usually on my belt but around the neck works as well. If something goes wrong and the canoe dumps or I lose my gun in a fall or while fleeing marauding scalp takers I still have the ability to make fire and THAT could be the difference between surviving and pushing up daisies! A lot of stitching goes into these pouches but I enjoy making them.
I’d like $40 for the set shipping included. You won’t be disappointed and if there’s ever a problem contact me and we will work it out.
