The records show Lewis obtained 2 "horse pistols" from the armory in Harpers Ferry. There were 2 types of U.S. pistols there. For 3 or 4 reasons, most everybody thinks they took the 1799 North and Chaney. It was copy of the 1777 Charleville that differs in 2 respects. The N&C barrel is longer by about an inch. and it has no belt clip. But the clip just screws onto the Charleville and can be removed in a minute.

As far as I know, none of the Italians made a copy of the N&C 1799. But at least 2 of them made a 1777 Charleville. The one by Armi San Marco (sometimes was sold as the Navy Arms) does not have Charleville engraved on the lockplate. So that's the one I wanted.

The one I just received today looks in excellent + condition or better and cost me $400 on Gunbroker. Plus fees, taxes, shipping. Gunbroker charges a "fee" to buyers to cover new government regulation fees, It's not a tax. It was about $10 and is charged the buyer at the end of all auctions.

For about a year I had a Gunbroker option set to email me daily about new items that said Charleville in the title. And another one for 1777. Everyday one or two emails leading to wrong items, until about 10 days ago there it was for $400 and without the Charleville engraving. San Marco. Said to be excellent, and it was!

Original, over $3000
