I am a fan of unstained wood. Maple, if it is VERY curly, looks outstanding unstained, and tinted a nice golden brown with traditional brown varnish. If the wood is plain, it looks like manure. But then, it looks like manure if it is stained too.
I am about to start a gun that is to be stocked in a blank with very strong curl, and it looks great unstained and finished with brown varnish.
There are SOME old rifles that are unstained. Very few. The one that comes to mind is the "lion" Beck rifle that has had the comb cut down. One or two others that I can't think of at the moment.
This doesn't count all the unstained guns with red varnish.
