I am thinking of making my own Ft Ligonier style moccasins from elk hide. What tips or problems can you offer? The area I hunt is rock prone, so how much padding should I use?
Thanks

well i made my mocs from moose hide but i would say always leave a little more room than your foot add i/4 of an icnh to it around.also take your time.thats the main thing

I would suggest that if youare useing commercial tanned leather that you wet and strtch the leather before you cut out your pattern so the mocs don't "grow" on you.

i would say get some moose hide at two bears  its only 50 bucks for 12.5 square feet of moose hide any color

One of Mark Baker's videos shows how to make a pair of shoepacs which is basically the Ligioner style. I made a pair using his video as a guide and they came out perfect. I actually think it would be very difficult to screw it up.
I think it is his volume three video.

I have made a few pair of shoepacks using the Mark Baker video instructions. If you haven't seen it, I would suggest watching it. He shows how to make winter shoepacks with a wool insert. If you want to make a pair of summer shoepacks, simply use the instructions for making the wool insert but use leather. I would suggest using thick cowhide for the soles and make them double thick. Here's a tip: Make a shoepack out of wool. Take the wool shoepack apart, and use the pieces as a pattern for your leather shoepacks. It will make the process much easier.
