Lock Collecting?

Actually I did consider that at one time, though I never carried through on it. Back when they were still around I ordered from Narragansett Armes their Early Virginia Rifle with the Chambers round faced colonial lock. For some years after that I saw many ads in Muzzle Blasts and Muzzle Loader featuring some of Chambers' locks from different periods and often thought how interesting it would be just to buy the locks as a collection of flintlocks.

The last time I was there , a couple of years ago the place was needing a roof replacement…

Several areas of water intrusion , especially in the museum area..
The pic shows water spots on the ceiling in the store front area, but I didn’t see any water on the floor or the accoutrements…

Sad too see, I certainly hope it’s been repaired. It would be a shame too see it just continue to deteriorate..

Are we talking original flintlocks? I’ve got a small collection. Many are restoration projects.

That would be the thing that would interest me the most...original flintlocks.

Not a flintlock, but I ran across this lock a while back and snagged it. The original flat sear spring was replaced at some point with a coil spring. It works like it should. Stout mainsprings. Sure would look neat on a contemporary build. Unmarked. Not sure of a date range either.

I would consider it collecting art.

Gentlemen I have pi ked up a few double barrels in need of TLC. Half are pretty much wall hangers in need of a part or two like a good pair of hammers. One Belgian double needs a complete pair of back action locks.
In this instance the locks need not be high grade or even completely functional. Rust is okay. Just need to fill the lock .artists for a reasonably low cost (wall hanger, remember).
If anyone has such extras to trade or sell Idappreciate a PM. We can then compRe measurements etc a d come to an accord.

BTW, there is a site for Lock Collectors, as in; security locks, pad locks, etc. There is an amazing amount of antique locks out there, and I'm glad I never got hooked on them!

I am away from my shop, but I carry an image of the tracing I made of the lock mortise. Dimensions are in inches. Front edge of lock tips in and is captured under the standing breech, while rear edge is held down by a wood screw.
Of course,being a double, this is the left side lock. Right side is a mirror image.

Give a day or so to get everything back settled since I just got back from vacation. I do have a pair of old locks in my garage that I can check out for you

I just measured the 2 English back action locks and they are 1/2” too short. And 1/16” too narrow.

I was there a couple months ago and I didn't notice any water damage, but I was to busy looking and wishing he's got some cool stuff.
