Yesterday opened the spring turkey season here. We had a 30 MPH wind all day and nothing was moving but the trees. I only saw one hen all day. This morning started out nice and calm and I could hear four different toms gobbling. I didn't set any decoys out this morning, because the hen I saw yesterday had spooked as soon as she spotted them. By 06:45 I had two toms strutting and putting on a show, but at about 40 yards. Me just sitting in the bushes watching, gun ready and not moving. I knew that if I did a yelp then on the slate they would see my movement so I waited them out. After about 10 minutes they both headed back over the hill. As soon as the second tom was out of sight I got the slate yelping at them again. Here they come back again, but this time in closer. This guy stepped out in the clear at 18 yards and I dropped the hammer with a load of #6. He weighted in at 23.5 pounds and had a 9 inch beard. I plucked him and he is now in a brine, waiting to be smoked on Friday. Menu: smoked turkey, morel mushrooms, baked sweet potato, and some green beans.
