Got some lead this weekend from my club. When I melted it to make it smaller ingots and to flux is a few times, a gold colored layer kept forming. this stuff was coming up as fast as I could scimm it. One guy told my the lead originally came from a fork lift counter weight.
Thanks

This is common - not sure what the proper name is for it. I call it flux ......

I think it is oxidation of the lead, turn down your flame a bit and it'll go away.

I agree with slamfire and tans. you have the lead too hot, and its giving you oxidation on the surface. That is the gold color you are seeing. Reduce the heat to lower the temperature of the lead in the pot, and the gold color should go away.

Sorry, its not real gold!

better lisen to these boys they know what they're talking about, the temps too hot.
cut the heat down and you'll make better balls too!
