This video reminded me of a question I keep forgetting to ask. I started shooting back in the early 70's. The guy who showed my dad and I how to load a muzzleloader said using the ramrod like the guy in the background the 1st cpl minutes in would deform the ball, effecting the ballistics and was a waste of time. You should use steady pressure then seat the ball with one good direct push. I notice now that a lot of people are doing the TV ramrod bounce. Does this really affect the ballistics or is it personal preference/urban legend?

The video reminds me of why I shoot alone...

People walking/talking about, improper loading instructions, group's bunched up and firing with no line control, guess that's just grumpy ol' me but I taught my three kid's the difference tween a picnic and a shooting range...

Ed...

Bouncing a ram rod off a PRB is stupid if you are trying to do any precision shooting. You would never see a serious bench shooter or chunk shooter doing that. If all you need is minute of deer, it doesn't really matter

I have seen a number of skirmishers do it. But they are loading minnies and deforming the skirt outward in the breech may help.

Please, please tell us where this is so I can put it on my "never go there" list. I thought rendezvous might be fun but if those idiots are typical, I'll just shoot on my own.

AW Cheesewhiz...lighten up a bit...mebbe thos shooters were new at it and jest copying what they saw everyone else doin....
~ ~ not everyone is dyied in the wool the moment they are Borne... ~ ~ ~ ~

I posted this to bring attention to the Mowrey .
not the historical correctness or to show "proper
way to load ".....

I bounce a ramrod although much lighter then this just letting it fall of its own wt a few inchs. Learned it at my first shoot was told a ball that wasn't all the way down would move and the rod would't bounce.I dont beleve it but it is a habit now and I feel creepy if I dont.

I was told that bouncing the ramrod off the ball was how you make sure the ball was fully seated on the charge. Could be BS but its a habit for me now even though when I first started shooting muzzies I just pushed firmly down on the ram rod.
