Are you talking about something small enough to fit in a coat pocket? Its "japanned lacquered" exterior and holds a single small candle?

Ideally something a little bigger, something to sit on my desk to provide extra light by candle.

I have a stonebridge folding lantern that works for me. They are well made of brass and they are available on several internet sites.

Just ordered this off Etsy: Tri-folding Candle Box With Mica Pane Made of Tin Plated Steel by Colleen - Etsy. I have one of her Betty Lamps and high quality work.
Or if you prefer a more natural looking mica pane: Early American Tin Lighting - Home Page. Again, I've got one of his and it's high quality. I also drool over his ships' lanterns, but haven't brought myself to getting one yet.

I tried that many years ago without much success. Was looking for an 18thc example. An OH museum tried and sent me a tin one but based on a ACW example. The original cost continued to rise considerably over the construction. I was disappointed.
I have since found a couple of original European examples in brass, but have not found anyone willing to attempt to build one.
