Like feeding wood into a chipper.
You obviously have had better luck and probably a lot more experience knapping gun flints. I had couple different Knapp instructors tell me the heat treated stuff didn’t work well for gun flints, or fire starters, but I tried it anyway. They didn’t spark as well and often shattered. Might vary according to the material. Lots of different rocks in the “flint” category.
I quit Knapping after a little research showed the tribe knappers didn’t live very long, due to silicosis. And I hate wearing dust masks.
