Ok I picked up this old cylinder the other day for free

The bore is 5 inches with a 3/8 inch wall thickness.

I know the wall diameter is too thin as is but with a subchamber I'm thinking mortar or something like this.

Any suggestions?

Andy, nice find! I don't really have any ideas, but rather more questions: How are you going to breech the mortar? Will you sleeve the cylinder with another piece of steel bored to a smaller diameter? I have a couple of old cylinders off a tractor; I was just going to scrap them out but now maybe I'll hold them back and see how you do. Regards, Emery

I'm looking at sleaving the tube I have a 5 inch diameter piece of 4140 about 8 inches long, that I could bore a chamber into. Maybe sleave the bore to 4.5 inches just to have a normal size (12 pounder)It would be hard to find 5 inch projectiles.

if it were me i'd sleeve it with another 1/4" or 1/2", mount it on a carriage (scaled right), and use it to shoot grapeshot or chain.

i'm designing 3" & 4" bore cannons now for next year.
