Hobby Lobby sells wooden parts and stuff; they have bags of .75", (75 cal.!) wooden balls, perfectly round; I bought a bag (36 count) and am going to glue them onto a wooden base which they also sell in
various sizes. Then I'll experiment around with painting or coating them so they look like "dug" musket balls from the Rev era. I like the brownish color of 'dug' Civil War balls, and will try to duplicate that with
these "dropped" Rev War "bullets". Things like this can look cool on your desk, but maybe not at work! (wink, wink!)

Why not shoot musket balls/ minies into a soft backstop, leave them in there for a while , dig them out and use the " real thing" ?

Actually you shoot them into a relatively soft mound as a backstop. Dig them out of the ground and then put them into garden cow manure in a container, for about a year. Plenty of patina.... I've been told.

Pretty certain I seen an aged Lee R.E.A.L. at Gettysburg. Amazing how they have sold dug bullets for years, yet the supply doesn't seem to diminish.

Over the years I’ve dug hundreds of yankee three ringers, cleaners, buckshot, chewed lead and every other lead projectile, federal and confederate, fired from rifle, pistol, and carbine.

You might bury a chunk of lead and be able to get enough patina that will fool the neophyte but not those who know what they’re looking at.
