Missouri was a major battleground state. A lot of the fighting was "irregular", also known as guerilla warfare.

The bad blood between Missouri and Kansas lasted far beyond the war. My dad used to say that I was from a "mixed marriage" since my mom was from Kansas.

I didn't realize there was much CW activity that far north. I live just south of the MO/AR border. We have many old CW cemetery sites in the area.
People forget the Missouri River was the only major economic shipping route in the state for years. Easer to send things by riverboat, therefore around the river and north of it was more wealthy and prosperous than say, the ozarks. So it was worth fighting over. More money making farms up there.
