"A source from which something may be drawn as needed," in this case, for handling percussion caps at the bench.
Quite by accident, I found the bowl shape hollowed in the base acted like the curved coin compartments of a cash register and allows one cap at a time to be slid out using just the pad of one's forefinger. No more pinching about with greasy fingers in a square-bottomed cap tin! The thong passes through the base and its ends are tied together after passing through the top. The "well" is 3/8" deep and 1 1/2" wide and though it can certainly hold a tin of 100, the advantage of the curved inside is lost if too full.
The top was cut from an old galvanized electrical component (?) complete with plated rivets and the base was carved from mulberry.
