California, this doen't suprise me.
This is mostly because of the Brady Bill.

Seventeen states regulate private sales in some manner, from licensing handgun buyers to requiring background checks on all sales at gun show. (gun shows and classified ads are a primary secondary sale marketplaces)

Those states are California, Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania, and Rhode Island.

Not only can't you sell your gun directly to someone else in California (like your son-in-law) but I was told by the Rangemaster at the SLO (San Luis Obispo) Shooting Range that to just bring my guns from Arizona to his range (driving my car), I would have to "Transport them in a Locked Case and keep the Ammunition in a place away from the gun case". I asked him if I was bringing Golf Clubs would I have to store the balls away from the golf bag? He got a good chuckle out of that and said "Thats why they call this the Peoples Republic of California".
They have a real nice range by the way and I got in about 250 shots of golf. (They have a lot of golf balls to place on the berms for those who like small targets).

Makes me even more glad I live in the south! Calif. is know for it's flakey laws passed by the stupid liberals that seen to control the state. My heart goes out to the decent folks especially gun owners in that state.
