Why was a big ring on some models of Hand Gonnes?
It is such a simple device I can't figure out the ring!

Hand cannon often have some reinforcement (rings) like their big brothers, most especially a muzzle swell.

This ring is not around the barrel it is attached to the side of the wood at the barrel.I have seen pictures of other early gonnes with this ring. I just wonder why.
