Hi everyone

I wanted to share barrel measurements for an original ‘heavy’ 1763 Charleville musket that I’m copying.

Barrels for this musket are tough to find, as they’re considered very rare.

These measurements are an average of three observations i have made, one from maubeg and two from charleville.

I’m having a prototype made by Rice Barrel co.

Nifty. I bought an original French fusil de trait that had been restocked in the percussion era. I sent the barrel dimensions to Hoyt and use those barrels for any of my French trade gun stuff.

Examining original guns for correct, stock barrel and patterns has really opened up a new level of personal building skills for me. I’m hopeful i can get more access or own originals, it’s really eye opening.

I’m sending Bobby my 1774 barrel to copy, the barrel is in great shape too !

I have the following patterns

2 original 1766’s, a 1763 and a 1774.

I’m on the lookout for a 1717-1754, fort ligoner agreed to let me take some measurements.
Well, one of my future projects is a true ‘66. I have the lock kit for a ‘54 and am thinking of using it on one of those hodge podge rev war restocks or a 1794 contract musket. I’m still spit balling that project at this time though.

While on the subject, was there a method that the French used to secure the rammer that is not visible from the outside?

A 1717 just went through RIACO a couple months ago. I could have measured it.

Oh man bummer. I saw one for sale at rock island recently, after a close up, it ended up being a tulle gun, lock was a smaller style, and the octagonal section of the barrel went over 13”, infantry arms was just 8” from the breech, just had the small frizzen stirrup.

Sometimes there are variants of the 1717 that are tricky to spot, I’ve seen a few in collections often called marine muskets.
